So, you shot your wad on a brand spanking new iPod touch and don’t have a penny left for apps? Fear not, ’cause here are 40 great apps — from soup to nuts, games to news and social networking to weather — to help you make the most of the “funnest iPod ever.”

There is a small measure of organization here, but the numbers listed on the left are only to help keep count — not a ranking.

9. CrimeReports, free – There are crime apps and there are sex offender apps. Get both in a single download.
